The cemetery is marked by a tall, large monument located on the bank, south (to the left) of the tracks, about 50 feet. The monument can be seen plainly from the tracks.

The cemetery is on land owned by James and Rachael Willoughby. Ask at the house.

Directions: From the Courthouse, go south on South Main St. go 0.5 miles to the intersection of SR 60, turn left, go 1.3 miles to the intersection of SR 160, turn left, go 3.3 miles to the intersection of County Farm (formerly Poor Farm) Road, turn right, go 2.3 miles to the intersection of Farabee Road, turn left, go 0.3 miles to the intersection of Eastern School Road, and Blue River Baptist Church, go straight, go 0.5 miles to the intersection of Olive Branch Road, turn right, go 1.3 miles to the intersection of Olive Branch Road and Bethel Road, go straight 1.4 miles to a dirt lane on the left, just before a small bridge, turn left into the lane [at this point, you must leave the Lexsus, and have either a 4x4 or good walking shoes], to 0.1 miles to a stream crossing, [you have another option, you may cross the stream, or drive up the stream; if you drive look for the second field entrance on the left out of the stream], cross the stream and at the top of the bank turn hard left, follow the dirt lane 0.2 miles and look for another stream crossing, [this is an abrupt bank; not for the weak of heart in a 4x4], or continue on, another 0,1 miles to a gentler stream crossing, take the field entrance on the left out of the stream. The Motsinger Cemetary is at the far end of the field to your left, at the top of a mound, near the woods; it is out in the field, so it might be obscured if the field is planted in corn.

Old Elim Church Cemetery is north and west of the house near the barn. The stone enclosure and iron fenced portion of the cemetery can be seen from the road at 0.4 miles east of the barn.

Directions: From the Courthouse, go south on South Main St. go 0.5 miles to the intersection of SR 60, turn left, go 9.3 miles to the intersection of SR 335, turn left, go 0.3 miles to the intersection of Jefferson and 5th Street (at the stop sign), go straight 0.2 miles to a farm lane, on the right in a curve. Pull into farm lane and stop. Walk back farm lane 550' to a lone oak and sycamore on your right on either side of a small ditch, leave the lane turning right and walk towards the woods and hillside, and pass between the oak and sycamore until you come to a fence at the edge of the woods. There should be a fence coming down the face of the hill. Follow the fence up the hill, keeping the fence on your left, about 300 feet. The cemetery is about 100 feet to the right of the fence underneath a large oak.

The marker is on the left (east) side of the road at the top of the bank near the road. The marker maybe hard to see if weeds are grown up on the roadside; the marker is about 100 yards south of the driveway. This cemetery does not exist today.

Statesman, Author, Ambassador

John Hay was a great American statesman, diplomat, author and poet, whose political career spanned over 50 years.  He was born in a small brick home in Salem, Indiana, on October 8, 1838.

After John displayed considerable potential in his schooling, his Uncle Milton Hay, who was a practicing lawyer in Springfield, Illinois, took a special interest and sent him to Brown University, where he graduated in 1858. 

In 1860, when John Hay’s childhood friend, John Nicolay, was appointed Abraham Lincoln’s presidential campaign secretary, he was brought on board to assist with the enormous amount of correspondence. 

Hay grew to adore President Lincoln for his goodness, patience, understanding, sense of humor, humility, magnanimity, healthy skepticism, sense of justice, resilience and power, love of the common man and mystical patriotism. Many later noted that Lincoln too, loved Hay as a son and was very attached to him.

In 1903, after years of negotiating treaties, Hay successfully passed legislation that afforded the United States the opportunity to start construction on the Panama Canal. 

Brown University’s John Hay Library was named in his honor, as was the John Hay Air Base, in the Philippines and both his birth home, in Salem, Indiana and his summer estate, The Fells, in New Hampshire, have been historically conserved.
